New offering of telemental health services for teens cements Brightside Health as the most comprehensive telemental health care platform

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Sept. 17, 2024 – True to its mission of expanding access to care, Brightside Health now offers mental health services for teens aged 13 to 17, ensuring that younger populations have access to the care they need. With this expansion – and services like virtual intensive outpatient programs for substance use disorder and Crisis Care for elevated suicide risk – Brightside Health further solidifies its position as the industry’s most comprehensive telemental health care platform.

In 2023, 4.5 million U.S. teens aged 12 to 17 experienced a major depressive episode, yet less than a third received mental health treatment. Brightside Health aims to bridge this gap by offering teens and their caregivers specialized care and support from the comfort of home within two days, including after-school hours.

Brightside Health’s data-driven model is highly effective: Within 12 weeks, 86% of patients experience clinically significant improvement and 71% reach remission. Applying this same rigor to treating teens, a Brightside Health provider partners with the teen, and their caregiver where appropriate, to address issues such as peer pressure, social media challenges, life transitions, self-esteem, body image, trauma, and abuse. Treatment options include therapy or a combination of therapy and psychiatry services, with weekly video sessions, evidence-based skill-building, progress tracking through the Brightside Health app, and extensive caregiver support.

“Our expansion to serve teens demonstrates meaningful progress and our deep commitment to solving the hardest problems in mental healthcare,” said Brad Kittredge, Co-Founder and CEO of Brightside Health. “Paired with offerings like Crisis Care for those with elevated suicide risk and IOP for SUD, Brightside Health is the most comprehensive telemental health care platform available. We’ll continue to expand our services; collaborate with commercial, exchange, and government payers to increase access; and advance mental health treatment for underserved populations.”

Teen services are currently available in 15 states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Utah), with plans for a national rollout. As part of its commitment to treating underserved populations, Brightside Health proudly serves Medicaid beneficiaries and will expand its offerings for teens to include Crisis Care in 2025. Considering 27 million children under the age of 18 are enrolled in Medicaid, and suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens aged 14–18 years, the need for such services is paramount.

“Our focus has always been on treating the most challenging mental health conditions,” said Dr. Mimi Winsberg, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Brightside Health. “As teens are one of the most at-risk populations, this is a meaningful expansion to support our mission. We are dedicated to applying our methods wherever the need is greatest, ensuring superior clinical outcomes and the safest care possible.”

JMIR Mental Health study shows that GPT-4 predicts mental health crises with similar accuracy, but higher sensitivity and lower specificity, than trained clinicians

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – August 5, 2024 – Telemental health company Brightside Health today announced results of its peer-reviewed study evaluating the performance of a large language model (LLM) in predicting current and future mental health crisis episodes. The research, published in JMIR Mental Health, showed that OpenAI’s GPT-4 was able to identify and predict a mental health crisis (endorsement of suicidal ideation with plan) with similar accuracy, but higher sensitivity and lower specificity, than trained clinicians.

“In line with our commitment to utilize AI in a safe and controlled manner, this research highlights the potential of large language models for triage and clinical decision support in mental health,” said Dr. Mimi Winsberg, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Brightside Health. “While clinical oversight remains paramount, technologies such as these can help alleviate provider time shortage and empower providers with risk assessment tools, which is especially crucial for patients at risk of suicide.”

While use cases for AI in healthcare have grown, there has been limited research on using AI for the purpose of mental health crisis prediction. This peer-reviewed research analyzed data from 460 patients on the Brightside Health telehealth platform, including 260 patients who reported suicidal ideation with a plan to act on it, and 200 patients who did not endorse suicidal ideation. Six clinicians and GPT-4 were asked to predict the emergence of suicidal ideation with plan based only on the patient’s chief complaint, in free text, without access to any other patient information. Key results from the study include:

  • Similar accuracy of LLMs compared to clinicians: The data indicated that overall accuracy – i.e. correctly assigning suicidal ideation with plan vs. no suicidal ideation in the 460 examples – across the six clinicians using chief complaint alone ranged from 55.2% to 67% accuracy, with an average of 62.1%. The GPT-4 based model had 61.5% accuracy.
  • Time savings of LLMs: Data showed the average clinician took over three hours to evaluate the 460 samples of text provided, while GPT-4 completed the full evaluation in less than 10 minutes.

This research suggests tools such as GPT-4 hold promise for aiding clinicians in delivering mental health care, including timely care to higher acuity and severity patients. It also adds to Brightside Health’s growing body of research, including a peer-reviewed study published in JMIR Formative Research that demonstrated the reduction of suicidal ideation with treatment on a telehealth platform.

The company is the first and only telepsychiatry company offering services to Medicare Part B recipients in all 50 states and D.C., extending its total reach to 130 million covered lives

San Francisco, CA – June 25, 2024 – Brightside Health is proud to announce that it is the first telepsychiatry company to serve 100% of Medicare Part B beneficiaries nationwide, expanding access to life-saving mental health care for all who need it. The news comes less than a year after the company shared its initial expansion to Medicare and Medicaid. With this milestone, Brightside Health now serves 130 million covered lives and is the only company providing comprehensive telemental health services to a broad range of mental health diagnoses – from elevated suicide risk to substance use disorder.

Medicare beneficiaries are facing a mental health crisis, with one in four recipients living with a mental illness and those 65 and older having the highest rate of suicidal ideation. The shortage of providers who serve Medicare exacerbates the issue, with only three providers per 1,000 enrollees, resulting in less than half of patients receiving treatment, and average travel times of nearly an hour to see a behavioral health provider. With nearly 15% of Medicare beneficiaries utilizing emergency departments for mental health care, Brightside Health is tailoring programs to meet these unique population-level needs, closing care gaps, and creating efficiencies for payers, health systems, and hospitals.

“We’re proud to offer Medicare Part B beneficiaries access to Brightside Health’s suite of services and meet the substantial need among seniors for timely, high-quality mental health care across the full spectrum of needs,” said Brad Kittredge, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Brightside Health.

In addition to national coverage for Medicare Part B, Brightside Health continues to expand its reach with Medicare Advantage plans and has continued to seek ways to provide comprehensive care to underserved populations, most recently with its expansion into intensive outpatient programs for substance use disorder (SUD)

Acquisition of Lionrock Recovery extends commitment to deliver mental health care to all who need it

San Francisco, CA – June 12, 2024 – In line with its commitment to providing the highest quality care, Brightside Health now offers virtual intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for substance use disorder (SUD). Brightside Health’s acquisition of Lionrock Recovery launched this new service, enabling the company to provide comprehensive telemental health treatment for a wider range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, alcohol use disorder, and SUD.

Founded in 2010, Lionrock Recovery was an early pioneer in virtual substance abuse counseling. Similar to Brightside Health, Lionrock Recovery takes a personalized approach to care and leverages technology to break down barriers for those struggling with alcohol and other substance use. With this acquisition, Brightside Health advances its mission of delivering life-saving mental health care to everyone who needs it.

According to a survey by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 17% of people ages 12 or older reported an SUD in 2022. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 2018 and 2021, the emergency department (ED) – already a significant source of overcrowding and overspending – was flooded with 39% more SUD cases. Brightside Health has long partnered with payers and health systems to offer high-touch, tech-enabled services for acute patients discharged from the ED. With this new service, the company can offer timely, quality treatment to countless individuals struggling to find help for SUD.

“Substance use has been catastrophic to families, communities, payers, and health systems,” said Brad Kittredge, Co-Founder and CEO of Brightside Health. “In order to fully achieve our mission, fulfill our role in the healthcare industry, and be the best partner we can be, it’s important we apply the same rigor and high-quality standards to conditions like substance use disorder as we have with mental health. With our acquisition of Lionrock Recovery, we look forward to expanding into SUD and beyond.”

Brightside Health’s solutions encompass personalized psychiatry, clinically proven therapy, Crisis Care for patients with elevated suicide risk, and now, IOP services for SUD. IOP services provide time intensive, structured treatment for higher severity mental health conditions and/or SUD, and can be less disruptive and more cost effective than inpatient or residential treatment programs. Participants in an IOP attend individual and group therapy sessions, engage in evidence-based lessons, obtain psychiatric treatment and medication as needed, and have access to lab testing and additional peer support communities.

“At Brightside Health, we’ve always focused on the hard-to-treat cases. By offering substance use disorder programs, we are now treating more patients with modalities designed to address specific and complex conditions, including addiction and dual diagnosis,” said Dr. Mimi Winsberg, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Brightside Health. “I’m proud of our team of clinicians and the tools and expert care they are providing to people on the road to recovery, supporting patients and family members alike.”

This latest news from Brightside Health is part of a string of growth announcements, including a Series C funding round; new and expanded payer partnerships with Medicaid and Medicare; and notable results published on its award-winning Crisis Care program designed for individuals at elevated risk of suicide. The expansion into IOP for SUD enables Brightside Health to serve an even larger segment of mental health patients.

IOP for SUD is currently offered through Lionrock Recovery and will be officially integrated with Brightside Health in the coming quarters. For more information on Brightside Health, visit www.brightside.com.

With over $100M in total funding, the telemental health company is poised for its next phase of growth

SAN FRANCISCO–March 26, 2024–Telemental health company Brightside Health today announced a strategic Series C raise led by S32, as well as the appointment of industry titan Trip Hofer to the Board of Directors to advise on go-to-market strategy and execution. This news builds on the company’s recent momentum, including new and expanded payer partnerships to support Medicaid and Medicare lives and notable results for its award-winning Crisis Care program for individuals with elevated suicide risk.

Brightside Health serves people with mild to severe clinical depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders, including those with elevated suicide risk, through precision psychiatry, clinically proven therapy, and Crisis Care. The impressive activity and results attracted lead investor S32, along with Kennedy Lewis, Time BioVentures, and Anne Wojcicki (Redwood Pacific). Existing investors ACME, Mousse Partners, and Triventures also contributed to the raise of $33M, an intentional amount that will be used to fuel Brightside Health’s growth into new markets and new offerings. All of this comes at a critical time for the country as one in five adults live with mental illness, such as anxiety or depression.

“Brightside Health is on an exciting trajectory, and S32 is thrilled to support their mission to make mental healthcare more easily accessible to everyone,” said Mike Pellini, MD, General Partner at S32. “The company is well-positioned to expand their offerings with Medicare, Medicaid, and other underserved populations, while partnering with payers and providers to deliver measurably better outcomes.”

Since its $50M Series B in November 2021, Brightside Health has made significant developments, building programs for individuals with severe mental health conditions, expanding to new underserved markets, publishing close to a dozen peer-reviewed research papers, and deepening its leadership bench. Brightside Health has also continued to appoint advisors and reputable industry leaders to its Board of Directors to support aggressive yet attainable goals to scale, the latest of which includes Hofer, whose deep experience in the payer market will further strengthen Brightside Health’s go-to-market initiatives and execution.

“I’m honored to be joining Brightside Health’s Board of Directors as the company reaches this impressive milestone,” said Trip Hofer, Brightside Health board member and former CEO of Optum Behavioral Health Solutions. “Their proven track record in high-quality care delivery and meaningful growth over the past few years indicate that Brightside Health has found their distinct competitive advantage. I look forward to leveraging my experience to advise them on opportunities that will help them effectively scale, while maximizing impact for patients and payers alike.”

Brightside Health’s services are available for commercially insured and cash-pay patients in all 50 states as well as Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries in select states. In fact, Brightside Health recently announced an expansion with payer partners including CareOregon, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, and Centene. With this Series C funding, the organization’s leadership continues to chart plans for additional expansions.

“We’re thrilled to announce this raise and simultaneously welcome Trip, an incredible industry thought leader, to help propel Brightside Health into the next phase of our growth,” said Brad Kittredge, Co-Founder and CEO of Brightside Health. “These major steps forward enable us to accelerate our expansion into Medicare, Medicaid, and beyond, while deepening our advantage with technology and AI to deliver the best outcomes in the industry. This investment aligns with our continued focus on capital-efficient enterprise value creation, putting us on a comfortable path to profitability while further advancing our goals and mission.”

New and expanded partnerships include Centene, CareOregon, and other payers who will offer Brightside Health’s life-saving mental health care

San Francisco, CA – Feb. 21, 2024 – Brightside Health today announced new and expanded payer partnerships to support Medicaid and Medicare. The news comes just months after the company – which serves individuals with mild-to-severe clinical depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders – shared that it would begin serving 50 million Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries. These underserved populations will have access to all of Brightside Health’s life-saving mental health care services; this includes psychiatry, therapy, and its award-winning Crisis Care program for individuals with elevated suicide risk, which has demonstrated impressive results in its first year already.

Today’s news includes the following:

  • CareOregon – New contract to serve Medicaid
  • Blue Shield of California – New contract to serve Medicare Advantage
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas – Expanded contract to include Medicare Advantage
  • Traditional Medicare – Expanded to include Texas, California, Delaware, Arizona, New York, Washington, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, and Illinois
  • Centene – Expanding state-by-state, including Nebraska Total Care Medicaid and Wellcare Medicare Advantage

“We are continuously seeking ways to improve the lives of our members, and Brightside Health’s telemental health platform enhances psychiatric service accessibility, particularly for individuals who need access to high-quality medication services and urgent care for individuals with suicidal thoughts,” said Adam Proctor, Plan President and CEO at Nebraska Total Care, a subsidiary of Centene Corporation. “We look forward to the positive impact of this partnership and the additional access to psychiatric services that it brings to our members.”

A recent study in Psychiatry Research indicated that the prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts were statistically significantly higher among Medicaid recipients than privately insured individuals. And among the 65 million Americans enrolled in Medicare, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reported that 25% experience mental illness. There is a pressing need to provide quality mental health care to these underserved populations.

“No mental health platform is complete without addressing the needs of Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries, and these partnerships will provide access to life-saving mental health care for millions more people,” said Brad Kittredge, co-founder and CEO of Brightside Health. “We are scaling quickly to ensure access to high-quality, measurably better mental health treatment. The momentum and interest continue to build, and we’re thrilled to partner with these esteemed organizations across the country and share their commitment to expand exceptional mental health care options.”

SAN FRANCISCO–October 26, 2023–Brightside Health, a telehealth platform that delivers life-saving mental health care to individuals with mild-to-severe clinical depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders, announced today the appointment of Matt Mohebbi as Head of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Research. Brightside Health has been committed to the power of data-driven decision making and process automation from the beginning, as exemplified by its proprietary precision prescribing tool, PrecisionRx. In his new role, Mohebbi will substantially expand and accelerate Brightside Health’s AI and data efforts to further improve quality and efficiency for members, providers, and administrators on the company’s platform.

“Matt is a natural addition to the Brightside Health team as AI introduces new ways to advance quality and efficiency in the healthcare industry. He will play a key role in ensuring our technology continues to improve mental health patient outcomes across the entire clinical spectrum, affordably and at scale,” said Brad Kittredge, co-founder and CEO, Brightside Health. “His impressive background as both a startup founder and engineering leader will be key to implementing tactical use cases of AI to further enhance the care our members receive.”

With 15 years of engineering experience, Mohebbi is passionate about using AI at scale to solve real-world problems. Prior to joining Brightside Health, he was a VP of Engineering at GoodRx, managing the engineering teams responsible for core products and technologies. He also co-founded and served as CTO of Iodine (acquired by GoodRx), a startup that helped millions of Americans find the best medicine for them, and worked as a Software Engineer at Google, where he co-created Google Flu Trends.

“I am thrilled to join Brightside Health and help further their mission to deliver mental health care that Americans deserve,” said Mohebbi. “With the recent advancements in generative AI, it is an especially exciting time to work at the intersection of healthcare and AI. I look forward to expanding Brightside Health’s use of AI to offer more personalized care to every patient, including those at elevated risk of suicide.”

Mohebbi’s appointment follows that of Chris Murray as CFO and Julia Bernstein as COO, as well as the company’s expansion to serve Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries. For more information about Brightside Health, visit www.brightside.com.

With the addition of these partnerships, the company’s services will be available to over 100 million covered lives

San Francisco, CA – Oct. 5, 2023 – Underscoring its commitment to serve vulnerable populations, Brightside Health will begin offering high-quality mental health care to Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries. The telehealth company–which delivers life-saving mental health care to individuals with mild-to-severe clinical depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders–today announced new and expanded partnerships with Centene; Optum (to serve UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage members); Lucet (to serve Florida Blue members); Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas; and others. With these additions, Brightside Health will be able to provide in-network mental health services to 50 million more people, bringing its total covered lives to well over 100 million.

This expansion is significant as few telemental health providers accept Medicare and even fewer accept Medicaid, leading to major access and quality issues in mental health services for these populations. And it’s not for a lack of need: Medicaid is the single largest payer for mental health services in the U.S., and one in four Medicare beneficiaries are living with mental illness but only 40-50% receive treatment

“The ongoing mental health crisis places an increasing and disproportionate burden on Medicaid and Medicare recipients, making it extremely hard for participants in these programs to access timely and effective mental health care,” said Brad Kittredge, co-founder and CEO of Brightside Health. “With this expansion, we’re addressing a major gap in our healthcare system and ensuring that millions of Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries will be able to receive the timely and high-quality mental health care they need.”

Brightside Health’s full suite of services–personalized psychiatry, clinically proven therapy, and Crisis Care (our program for those with elevated suicide risk)–will be available under these partnerships. When paired with the company’s current commercial payer partnerships, Brightside Health will be able to provide covered care to more than one in three people in the U.S. In the coming months, the company will add even more covered lives through additional Medicaid and Medicare partnerships and by offering services to traditional Medicare Part B beneficiaries.

Brightside Health has conducted extensive research demonstrating the benefits of telehealth for both Medicaid and Medicare populations. A study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry demonstrates the effectiveness of telemental health for individuals with reported incomes under $30k/year. A separate study, also published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, found older adults see similar improvement in depression symptom severity after using a telehealth platform as younger adults, suggesting that age is not a barrier to telepsychiatric care benefits.

SAN FRANCISCO–April 11, 2023–Brightside Health, a telehealth platform that delivers life-changing mental health care to individuals with mild-to-severe clinical depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders, announced today the appointment of Chris Murray as Chief Financial Officer. Murray will be responsible for the strategic and operational direction of Brightside Health’s finance function as the company continues to grow and deliver critical mental healthcare.

“Chris is an outstanding finance and operations leader with deep healthcare, technology, and value-based care industry knowledge, and we’re fortunate to welcome him to our team,” said Brad Kittredge, co-founder and CEO, Brightside Health. “As Brightside Health continues executing on its mission and next phase of growth, we’re confident that Chris will help us continue to enhance all aspects of our financial and operational execution.”

Murray brings over 15 years’ experience in roles across finance, operations, and go-to-market functions at healthcare and technology companies. He joins Brightside Health from Evolent Health, a healthcare company that delivers clinical solutions to payers and providers, where he served as Vice President of Finance. Throughout his career, Murray has established a strong track record of driving growth and strategic initiatives while maximizing value, which will be instrumental for his new position at Brightside Health.

In his new role, Murray will directly oversee all accounting, finance, and tax functions, including financial planning and analysis (FP&A). He will also play a critical role in Brightside Health’s operations to ensure the company continues to deliver the best clinical outcomes at scale, along with superior financial performance.

“This is a critical time for Brightside Health as we witness increased rates of anxiety and depression, high demand for telehealth, and overutilization of emergency services,” said Murray. “I applaud the company’s investment in scaling digital technology and high-acuity services to deliver life-changing mental healthcare, including for patients at elevated risk of suicide. I look forward to applying my experience growing organizations’ financial health to position Brightside Health for continued success in meeting today’s industry challenges head on.”
